Porous Aerogels from Shape-Controlled Metal Nanoparticles Directly from Nonpolar Colloidal Solution

Porous architectures of noble metal nanocrystals are promising for many catalytic as well as for fuel cell applications. Here we present the synthesis of porous, extremely lightweight aerogels of self-supported Pt nanocubes and nanospheres by direct destabilization from nonpolar colloidal solution using hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4·H2O) as gelation reagent. The template-free voluminous lyogels of the Pt nanocrystals are converted to macroscopic solid aerogel monoliths by supercritical drying. The aerogels from Pt nanocubes mostly exhibit (100) as the exposed crystal facets throughout the entire monolithic surface, while the aerogels from quasi-spherical Pt nanocrystals exhibit many crystal facets such as (111) and (100). Furthermore, the aerogels exhibit remarkably low densities of ?0.19 g cm-3 ± 0.038 g cm-3 (?0.9% of bulk Pt) and a specific surface area in the range of ?6400-7000 m2 mol-1. The nanocube gels show better catalytic performance than the nanosphere gels when employed for asymmetric hydrogenation reaction, which is exemplarily shown for 4,4-dimethyldihydrofuran-2,3-dione to d-/l-pantolactone conversion with an excess of 9% for the d-enantiomer. Owing to their high specific surface area and certain type of exposed crystal facets, Pt aerogels developed here are highly promising for possible future applications in facet selective catalytic reactions.

Performance of a conical spouted bed pilot plant for bio-oil production by poplar flash pyrolysis

Abstract Poplar (Populus nigra) flash pyrolysis has been performed at the IK4-Ikerlan 25 kg h-1 pilot plant equipped with a conical spouted bed reactor. Gas, bio-oil and char yields and properties have been studied in the 425-525C range. This reactor has been proven to be especially suitable for this process as high bio-oil yields have been obtained, with the maximum being 69 wt.% at 455C. The bio-oil has been collected in two fractions: the lighter one, which accounts for 85 wt.% of the bio-oil, has a high water content and is composed mainly of acids and ketones, whereas the heavier fraction has a lower water content and is rich in phenols. These fractions are miscible, obtaining a bio-oil with a water content lower than 25 wt.% and a higher heating value in the 16-18 MJ kg-1 range.

Regioregularity is a crucial property in the synthesis of DNA analogues, as natural DNA is synthesized exclusively in the 5? to 3? direction. We have focused our attention on the determination of the regioisomeric distribution of poly(3?,5?-cyclic 3-(3-butenyl) thymidine ethylphosphate)s obtained from the ring-opening polymerization of (R)-3?,5?-cyclic 3-(3-butenyl) thymidine ethylphosphate. The regioisomeric preference was investigated by comparison to synthesized model compounds of 3?,3?-, 3?,5?-, and 5?,5?-linkages, where the model 3?-phosphoester linkages were to the secondary alcohol of 3-hydroxytetrahydrofuran and the model 5?-linkages derived from coupling to the primary alcohol of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol. From the 31P resonance frequency assignments of those small molecule model compounds, 31P NMR spectra revealed the major connectivity in the polymer backbone to be 3?,5?-linkages, with ?30% of other isomeric forms. Model reactions employing a series of alcohol initiators imparting various degrees of steric hindrance, to mimic the increased steric hindrance of the propagating alcohol relative to the initiator, were then conducted to afford the corresponding ring-opened unimer adducts and to gain understanding of the regioselectivity during the ring-opening polymerization. 1H-31P heteronuclear multiple-bond correlation spectroscopy showed ethanol and 4-methoxybenzyl alcohol initiation to yield only the P-O5? bond cleavage product, whereas attack by isopropyl alcohol upon (R)-3?,5?-cyclic 3-(3-butenyl) thymidine ethylphosphate afforded both P-O3? and P-O5? bond cleavage products, supporting our hypothesis that the increased steric hindrance of the propagating species dictates the regioselectivity of the P-O bond cleavage. Further model reactions suggested that the P-O5? bond cleavage products can be detected upon the formation of dimers during the ring-opening polymerization. Overall, this work provides a fundamental understanding of the polymerization behavior of six-membered cyclic phosphoesters and broadens the scope of DNA analogues from the ring-opening polymerization of 3?,5?-cyclic phosphoesters.
