Since the response to external stimuli often variesamongDEDfungal strains,weevaluated the effect of inoculum size on 8 strains of the 3 species of DED agents by determining the proportion of yeast and mycelium produced at different spore inoculum concentrations in defined liquid shake medium. The results show that not all DED fungi strains respond similarly to inoculum size effect, since variations were observed among strains. It is thus possible that the different strains belonging to phylogenetically close species use different signalling molecules or molecular signalling pathways to regulate their growth mode via quorum-sensing mechanisms.

Polysiloxane assisted fabrication of chiral crystal sponge coated capillary column for chiral gas chromatographic separation

Chiral crystalline sponges (CCSs) are a recent class of chiral porous metal complexes potential in chiral recognition. Here we report the fabrication of polysiloxane OV-1701 incorporated CCS-3S (PSO/CCS-3S) coated capillary column as a novel stationary phase for gas chromatographic separation of diverse racemates. CCS-3S with the chiral ligand of (S)-mandelic was selected as the model CCS. With the aid of polysiloxane OV-1701, PSO/CCS-3S coated capillary column gave improved resolution, broader enantiomers separation scope and much larger McReynolds constants than CCS-3S coated capillary column. Many racemates that cannot be separated on CCS-3S coated capillary column were well resolved on PSO/CCS-3S coated capillary column. The PSO/CCS-3S coated capillary column also gave wide linear range, low limit of detection, good repeatability and reproducibility, and fine inertness and anti-column bleeding properties for the separation of enantiomers. In addition, the PSO/CCS-3S coated capillary column presented better resolution for the studied racemates than commercial beta-cyclodextrin based Cyclosil B (30 m long ¡Á0.32 mm i.d. ¡Á 0.25 mum film thickness), beta-DEX 225 (30 m long ¡Á0.25 mm i.d. ¡Á 0.25 mum film thickness) and amino acid based Chirasil L-Val (25 m long ¡Á0.25 mm i.d. ¡Á 0.12 mum film thickness) capillary columns. These results indicate the great potential of PSO/CCS-3S coated capillary column in separation of enantiomers.

Volatile composition of Mencia wines

Monovarietal Mencia wines from two different Appellation of Origin Controlled (AOC) of Galicia (NW Spain) were analyzed. The content of some varietal and fermentative volatile compounds was determined by gas-chromatography and GC-mass spectrometry. These red wines, independently of their origin, showed terpene profiles, that were typical of their varietal characteristics with an important contribution of linalool, citronellol, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. The 67 analytical variables were submitted to analysis of variance, and the results showed that only nine volatile compounds were significantly different (p<0.05) among the two AOC (trans-3-hexenol, 1-butanol, isobutanol, ethyl acetate, hexyl acetate, butyric acid, gamma-butyrolactone, methionol, and N-(2-hydroxy-ethyl)-acetamide). Principal component analysis showed the differentiation of wines according to geographical areas. Peach growth cycle monitoring using an electronic nose

In regions with the predominance of agriculture, an inspection of the quality and fruit maturity index in the orchard is usually analyzed by the farmer’s experience, which can be subject to errors and generate a greater cost of time and money. Thus, monitoring equipment that generates a rapid and accurate response to the growth cycle of the peaches in the crop is desirable, together with a low marketing cost. For this purpose, electronic noses prove to be the most suitable equipment, since it allows online monitoring of the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) generated by the crop. In this context, a prototype was developed to perform the classification of the fruit growth cycle (pre-harvest and post-harvest). Models with the 13 gas sensors made with a metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) and the reduction to 7 sensors were studied with the aid of the Pearson’s Chi-square test, for comparison. Samples with 4 growth stages were used for the training and construction of the model. The accuracy of 99.23% in the validation step and 98.08% in the sample test step using the Random Forest method with linear discriminant analysis for the reduced data set for 7 sensors shows that the device is promising for monitoring of areas with an intense emission of VOCs.
