Hydrodeoxygenation Model Compounds gamma-Heptalactone and gamma-Nonalactone: Density from 293 to 473 K and H2 Solubility from 479 to 582 K

Determining the H2 solubility in model compounds that represent lignocellulose derivatives is valuable for the study of upgrading processes such as hydrodeoxygenation. In this work, gamma-heptalactone and gamma-nonalactone are studied as model compounds at conditions relevant to hydrodeoxygenation. The solubility of H2 in the lactones was determined in the range of 479 to 582 K and 3 to 10 MPa. The solubility measurements were performed in a continuous flow setup based on the visual observation of the bubble point. Furthermore, the densities of the lactones were measured in order to provide the necessary data for the solubility calculations. The density measurements were performed from 293 to 373 K and from 0.16 to 9.9 MPa in a vibrating tube density meter. Using the measurements, a model of the density as a function of temperature and pressure was developed, obtaining average relative deviations on the order of 0.1%. Similarly, the Peng-Robinson equation of state with the Boston-Mathias modification was used to predict the H2 solubility in the lactones. A temperature-dependent model of the symmetric binary parameter of the equation of state was regressed from the data in order to improve the predictions.

Volatile components of the phenolic fractions from Koshu and Zenkoji wine flavor concentrates were identified by combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.The fraction from Koshu wine composed of 13 volatile phenols, 11 fatty acids, 8 lactones, 4 ketones and many alcohols.The volatile compounds identified in the fraction from Zenkoji wine were almost common to those from Koshu wine with only slight differences.The phenolic fraction had no wine like flavor, but possesed a phenolic and disagreeable odor. 13 volatile phenols in Koshu wine and 10 phenols in Zenkoji wine were detected.Five phenols (2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol, 3,4-dimethylphenol, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-ethylphenol and 4-allyl-2,6-dimethoxyphenol) were found for the first time as volatile components of wine and another 11 compounds were also newly detected in Koshu or Zenkoji wines.

Room temperature ionic liquids (ILs) are well established stationary phases (SPs) for gas chromatography (GC) in several fields of applications because of their unique and tunable selectivity, low vapor pressure and volatility, high thermal stability (over 300 C), and good chromatographic properties. This study is focused on an IL based on a phosphonium derivative (trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium chloride, [P66614 +] [Cl?]), previously shown to be suitable as a gas chromatographic SP because of its unique selectivity. In particular, it aims to establish the operative conditions to apply [P66614 +][Cl?] to routine analysis of samples containing medium to high volatility analytes with different polarity, organic functional groups and chemical structure. In the first part, the study critically evaluates long term [P66614 +][Cl?] column stability and maximum allowable operating temperatures (MAOT). The relatively low MAOT (210 C) requires the adoption of a dedicated approach for analytes eluting above this temperature based on a suitable combination of efficiency and selectivity, and column characteristics (length, inner diameter and film thickness) and operative conditions. The performance of [P66614 +][Cl?] as a GC SP have been validated through the Grob test, a model mixture of 41 compounds of different polarity, structure, and with different organic functional groups in the flavor and fragrance field, a standard mixture of 37 fatty acid methyl esters, some essential oils containing pairs or groups of compounds of different volatility critical to separate in particular peppermint, thyme, oregano, sandalwood and frankincense. Characterization of important sulfur and nitrogen compounds in Lang baijiu by application of gas chromatography-olfactometry, flame photometric detection, nitrogen phosphorus detector and odor activity value

The volatile compounds in three Lang baijiu (?Honghualangshi, Y1?, ?Langjiulangge, Y2?, and ?Laolangjiu, Y3?) were identified by gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC?MS), flame photometric detection (FPD), and nitrogen phosphorus detector (NPD) with the aid of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE). The results showed that a total of 60, 62, and 61 compounds with aroma contribution were present in samples Y1, Y2, and Y3, respectively. Additionally, the odor activity value (OAV) was used to evaluate the important compounds. The results indicated that 2-methyl-3-furanthiol (OAV: 20?30), 3-mercaporhexyl acetate (OAV: 13?20), beta-damascenone (OAV: 30?57), (E)-2-nonenal (OAV: 9?22), heptanal (OAV: 4?13), hexanal (OAV: 9?12) and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine (OAV: 4?14) contributed to the aroma of Lang baijiu. Finally, six compounds (ethyl hexanoate, 2-methyl-3-furanthiol, (E)-2-decenal, guaiacol, 3-mercaporhexyl acetate, and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine) with different OAVs were used to determine the effect on the threshold of aromatic reconstitution (AR). It can be seen that ethyl hexanoate, 2-methyl-3-furanthiol, 3-mercaporhexyl acetate, and 2-isopropyl-3-methoxypyrazine could significantly decrease the threshold of AR. The possible reason was that these four compounds had synergistic effects with the aroma compounds in AR. Compared to ethyl hexanoate and 2-methyl-3-furanthiol, the threshold of AR had a slight difference in the presence of (E)-2-decenal in AR. After the addition of guaiacol, the threshold value of AR was significantly increased, indicating a masking effect between guaiacol and the original aroma compounds in AR.

The Tracing of VOC Composition of Acacia Honey During Ripening Stages by Comprehensive Two-Dimensional Gas Chromatography

In this study, VOC profiles of acacia flowers and honey samples at different processing stages and related comb wax samples were studied using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometry. It was found that some monoterpene compounds like alpha-pinene, myrcene, cis-beta-ocimene, and 4-terpineol were common for acacia flower and all acacia honey samples, and the presence of verbenone and ocimene was first established in acacia honey. The most enriched VOC profile was obtained for raw honey before cell capping, where the final composition of lactones was achieved. On the contrary, number of alcohols, esters, and variety of terpenes, as well as their concentration in the honey samples decrease through ripening processes. Strained honey was characterized by the absence of camphor, alpha-bisabolol, and 3-carene, while isophorone and hexanoic acid were identified only in this type of honey. The composition of final VOC profile of honey was also influenced by the age of comb wax. The additional aromatic and lactone compounds, e.g., phenol, 1-phenylethanol, delta-hexalactone, and gamma-heptalactone were observed for honey maturated in old dark comb wax.
